This article focuses on the profound scientific and philosophical implications of Martin T. Orne's concept of demand characteristics. To ferret out the systematic role of demand characteristics (and the "good subject effect") in research with human participants, Orne proposed the use of quasi-control subjects. What were originally conceived as "nuisance variables" have come to be viewed as independent variables of theoretical interest in their own right.
